SF FOOD GUIDE

Hi everyone! Here are some food and drink shops in San Francisco that I think are worth checking out. The restaurants listed are not in any specific order. Feel free to leave any recommendations and thoughts in the comments section at the bottom of the blog post. What are some of your favorite restaurants in San Francisco?

U :DESSERT STORY

If you have a sweet tooth or have a passion for aesthetic desserts, head over to U :Dessert Story in the Castro District. With Korean, Japanese, and Thai influenced desserts, this shop will satisfy your taste buds and foodie photography dreams! They have coffee, tea, cakes, toast, shaved ice and other desserts. Out of the ones I’ve tried, the “Strawberry Cheesecake Yogurt Kakigori” is my favorite because there are tiny cheesecake bits on the very bottom of the ice. There was a line when I went in the afternoon on a Saturday so if you are coming as a group, make sure everyone from your “party” has arrived because they won’t seat you if have missing people.

ROOSTER AND RICE

Cock-a-doodle-doo! After having my fair share of Hainanese Chicken Rice from Singapore and Taiwan, I always come back to the bay area craving it. I’m glad I found a good chicken & rice place in SF. I recommend Rooster & Rice’s Thai Chicken Rice if it’s your first time trying this dish. Each entree comes with a bowl of chicken or vegetable soup and they have a vegetarian option. Make sure to add their sweet soybean sauce!

MENSHO

If your favorite part about amusement parks is waiting in line, then Mensho is the place for you! Just kidding. People start lining up 30 minutes to an hour before the restaurant open and there aren’t a lot of seats inside. If you haven’t tried Paitan before, I recommend going to Mensho and ordering their Tori Paitan Ramen. This thick, creamy, and flavorful chicken-based soup will satisfy your taste buds. The chashu meat is so tender that it almost melts in your mouth.

TEA HUT

How cute is Tea Hut’s bear logo? I’ve been seeing these adorable cups on my Instagram feed and wanted to get one for myself. Their boba is QQ, which means perfect chewy consistency, and their drinks are not too sweet. If you really don’t like sweet drinks, I would recommend getting them at 75% sugar level. My top two favorites from here are the Fruit Fusion Green/Seasons Tea and Oreo Milk Tea. There’s real fruit you can eat after you finish the fruit teas. With no additives or preservatives, the quality of the drinks is apparent.

KITCHEN STORY

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the word, ‘brunch’? Let me guess, is it Millionaire’s Bacon? If it isn’t, you need to try it at Kitchen Story. Slow-cooked with brown sugar and spices, Millionaire’s Bacon is a thicker and sweet version of regular bacon. Their rainbow potato side is delicious. They also offer bottomless mimosas! Kitchen Story is definitely a great place to have lunch with friends and family. If you are not a brunch person, they have other options such as burgers.

Hours: Everyday 8AM-2:30PM, 5PM-10PM
Phone: (415) 525-4905

KAISEN DON

I normally don’t eat raw fish because I’m sensitive to “fishy” taste and texture, but Kaisen Don’s fish is so fresh that there’s no oceany flavor. Each menu item is beautifully and carefully presented. The prices are a bit on the higher end and there aren’t a lot of seating spaces so plan accordingly. It’s a nice place to treat yourself once in a while. If you don’t like raw fish, they have cooked food like chashu and unagi dons. Chirashi bowls come with complimentary miso soups!

URBAN RITUAL

As more and more tea shops open up in San Francisco, Urban Ritual in Hayes Valley is not one to miss out on. Each drink is unique and creative. My personal favorites from here are Matcha Toffee, Strawberry Milk Bar, and White Grape Yuzu. If you’ve never had toffee brittle in your matcha drinks, you definitely need to try it; it’s one of the customer favorites!

ARIA, KOREAN TAPAS

Have you ever had KFC (Korean Fried Chicken)? I felt the street style vibes when I saw the graffiti art on the exterior of the restaurant. I would describe Aria as “when kimbap meets hip-hop”. Opened in 2012, this Korean hole-in-the-wall restaurant specializes in Korean fried chicken as well as other delicious dishes like tteokbokki and bulgogi. If you’re ever in SF, I definitely recommend adding Aria to your foodie checklist!

SUPER DUPER BURGERS

My oh my, Super Duper Burgers lives up to its name. With 12 locations opened, my favorite is the one on Mission. This location has more outside seating and offers a happy hour special (Monday to Friday 4PM-7PM and all day Saturday) of free unlimited fries with any beer or wine purchase including the $15 pitcher of beer special. I recommend trying their four special burgers: blue cheese, Caesar, four cheese, and vegetarian. Their veggie patty is made of rice and corn, so the texture is like a crab cake’s. They also have freshly made donuts and organic milkshakes. The strawberry milkshake is made of fresh strawberries that are washed every morning. With a great happy hour deal, juicy burgers, and Jenga, Super Duper Burgers is a great spot to hang out with your friends and coworkers!

MATCHA CAFE MAIKO

If you’re a fan of matcha, then you need to visit Matcha Cafe Maiko in Japantown. They use high-quality organic matcha powder straight from the Harima Garden in Japan. I could taste the difference from other matcha drinks. If you’re feeling extra boujee, try their beautiful 24k gold matcha soft serve! You can choose to mix matcha and vanilla flavors. I recommend their Maiko Special which comes with agar jelly, red bean, mochi, chestnut, corn flakes, matcha chiffon cake, and soft serve.

MARUGAME UDON

Slurp on these delicious noodles! With over 1,000 stores worldwide, Marugame Udon specializes in Japanese Sanuki udon, which has a different texture from other udon noodles. You can watch your udon noodles get made to order from start to finish. The first bite got me saying “Oishiii!” Their soup base is flavorful and you can choose to add sides from a bunch of tempura items. There’s usually a long line outside, but the line moves fast and there’s plenty of seating inside!
